Check Before You Build!

Autor: | Freitag, 26. August 2011 | Kommentare

The first thing to consider when planning a build (whether it is an extension or a new build) is if you need permission for the changes you wish to make. A good starting point for this is the Directgov site.  Here you can get a breakdown of exactly what planning permission is,  and you can use an interactive tool to discover which home improvements require permission and which do not.

In any case, you should contact your local council before starting any project, as other factors may be at play to make your case unique (a period home or conservation area, for example).

Once you’ve established that you need permission,  you can get help with you application here. If your application to build has been denied, you can also find information on how to initiate an appeal.

For more information:
In England and Wales, visit the Planning Portal.
In Scotland, visit the Building Standards section of the Scottish Government website.
