When it comes to theft, tradespeople are often targeted for their tools and equipment. With the holidays just around the corner, many people have begun purchasing gadgets and other valuable items. Our friends from ADT have some advice for you when it comes to securing your home from break-ins.

Tradesmen and homeowners often find themselves positioned as targets for thieves, which is why a recent advert from security providers ADT may have struck a particular chord with MyHammer readers.

The TV ad – which ran under the slogan ‘it’s not just what they take, it’s what they leave behind’ – featured a series of hard-hitting stills that show homeowners looking nervous and edgy after a break-in.

The message of the ad is was backed up by research from the Victims Support Group that shows 57 per cent of burglary victims experience difficulty sleeping after a home intrusion and it’s easy to understand why. We spend a lot of time, effort and money, making our homes our own and when someone steps into the comfortable family bubble we have created for ourselves it’s not easy to stomach.

Choosing to protect your home with CCTV systems, security alarms or even a dog may provide you with the peace of mind that gaining entry to your home is more difficult for intruders and on one level such acts can be seen as another form of home maintenance.

In the aftermath of a break-in there are a lot of points of action to be taken – from informing the police and insurers about what’s been taken through to appointing tradesman to fix doors, windows and other fixtures and fittings that have been damaged and these can all be made be more difficult by the emotional impact of such an event.
