Whether you’re installing flooring in one room or all of them, choosing the right flooring for your home can be stressful and confusing.

Here are a few things to consider when selecting your new floor:

The most important factor to consider is your lifestyle. For example, if you have small children or pets, that plush white carpet may not be the best choice for the lounge. Are you installing the flooring in a high-traffic part of your home? You will need a harder-wearing floor in the family room than you would in a home office.

Try to select colours and patterns that will allow you to easily change the style of the room. While it may be tempting to give in to your 10-year old daughter’s request for a powder pink carpet, it could mean replacing the floor again within a few years time.

Cleaning and Maintenance
It’s important to give some consideration to how much time you have for maintenance. Carpets require regular vacuuming and occasional shampooing, making them ideal for lower-traffic areas. Ceramic tiles are very easy to clean and require little maintenance, however they can be slippery. Hardwood is also easy to clean, but it requires more maintenance than ceramic or laminate.

Here’s a quick comparison of the pros and cons of various floor types:

Hardwood – Classic look, matches any décor, long-lasting. More expensive to install, must be maintained (treated) over time.
Ceramic Tile – Durable and easy to clean/maintain. More expensive to install, can be very slippery.
Carpet – Available in styles, textures and colours, to suit any taste. High-maintenance, wears out faster in high-traffic areas.
Parquet – The look of hardwood at less cost. Not as durable as hardwood.
Vinyl Tile – Affordable and available in many patterns and colours. Can peel over time, has a shorter life-span.

There are, of course, other options, and you should do some research to decide what suits you and your home best. Once you’ve made your choice(s), the next step is getting the job done.
