Just because you may live in a small space doesn’t mean you have to feel stifled!

Here are 4 easy ways to live large in small quarters:

The first, and most important, step in making the most of your space is to get rid of things that you don’t really need. From furniture to dust-collecting ornaments – if it’s not serving a purpose, get it out of the way.

Get Organised
Use decorative baskets for documents and small items. Make use of the space under your bed. Use over-the-door hooks and hangers.  You can also create storage compartments in closets and under stairs. Get creative!

Use Every Space
Rearrange the furniture to create open spaces. If you live in a very small space, such as an efficiency flat, consider getting a few multi-purpose furniture items (such as a sofa bed, or folding table). Leave no space wasted.  You can even make use of the walls as storage by installing floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.  You can also make your space multifunctional. Create a workspace in the bedroom, or a dining space in the living room.

Lighten and Brighten
If buying new furniture is not an option, consider painting and accessorising.  Light, bright spaces feel larger. Avoid heavy, bulky curtains. Instead choose shears, a valance, or forgo the curtains altogether and just use mini blinds. If you don’t have much natural light, add a few lamps. Mirrors also help create an illusion of a larger space.

Looking for a larger-scale solution?
–    Create a larger room by having a wall knocked out.
–    Replace your current windows with larger ones.
–    Get built-in cupboards or fitted wardrobes.

If you do take the plunge and decide to make big changes, be sure to call in the professionals!
