Tips for Moving House

Anyone who has moved home at some point in the past probably has a story of stress and headache to tell!  Although it entails a lot of work, moving house does not have to be a dreaded task.

The most important thing to do to reduce moving-related stress? Have a plan!  The easiest way to go about it is to create a checklist.  You can then split the various tasks into a manageable timeline – taking the added stress out of moving day!

6-8 Weeks Before You Move:
•    Take care of any relevant insurance issues
•   Notify service providers (such a phone, cable, etc.) and utilities (water, gas, etc.) and if possible, make arrangements for hook-ups at your new home
•    Post your removing-job and get multiple quotes; check out various options – and do your research when choosing a removing company
•    Begin packing non-essential (ie. seasonal) items

1-2 Weeks Before You Move:
•    Arrange to have your post redirected
•    Confirm arrangements with the removal company, as well as move-in time
•    Allow yourself sufficient time for packing – and label clearly

The Day Before You Move:
•    Defrost your freezer and clean the fridge
•    Pack an over-night bag with all the essentials for a few days (to avoid the stress of trying to find items in various different boxes and bags)
•    Keep a box aside for items you will want straight-away at your new home (a few cups and saucers, for example) – again, the key is avoiding the fuss and stress of not being able to quickly find items you need before you’ve unpacked

Moving Day:
•    Unplug appliances you are leaving behind
•    Take a deep breath – and a final check of the property
•    When you get to your new home, remember that you don’t have to unpack everything straight away – that’s why you packed an essentials box!

Here are a few sites that will help you keep it together – and get it all to your new home in one piece!
